How Can You Quit Your Job and MAKE MONEY ONLINE!One of the questions I hear most often from people who are starting their own business is some form of the following:

“Roxy, when should I/can I quit my day job?”

This is a very common question and to be honest, the answer isn’t cut and dried. There is no perfect time to quit your 9-5 just like there is no perfect anything in business.

What we can do though, is talk about how to know when it’s time, what to do to prepare, and some benefits of leaving.

Removing the Glass Ceiling

As a business owner myself, I can tell you that the freedom of not having a job to go to every day is amazing.

I can record videos for my business on a random Tuesday afternoon. I can set my own schedule and do the things that are important to me.

My business is social media advertising, which includes managing marketing campaigns on Facebook and other social media platforms, setting up email marketing automation, and I actually still build a website here and there.

The best thing that has happened since I quit my day job is that I removed the ceiling on my income. Only I control how much I make. There is no competition between my colleagues and me for the one or two positions that open up in a given year for promotion.

Every time I sign on a new client, my income goes up to a level that it might take years to achieve if I was waiting on my next promotion at a typical day job.

Where to Look for Your First Client

If you aren’t familiar with Indeed, you need to go there right after you watch this video and check it out. Indeed is basically a website where companies can post jobs and you can search for jobs by location, type, etc.

So I went to Indeed and I did a local search for anyone in my area who needed a social media manager or assistant. And I actually found a local orthodontist that had posted an opening for one.

I was thrilled to find this because, as a general rule, orthodontists and dentists are on the easier side to serve as your first social media advertising client.

What Is Your Money Mindset?

Have you ever had any of the following thoughts?

  • Money is scarce.
  • Money is limited.
  • There’s only so much money to go around.
  • It’s hard to increase your income.

Most of us were taught by our parents and the education system that money is scarce and we need to find a job that offers us security so we can have enough to live. And if we want more, we have to work our butts off to get the smallest promotion.

I have struggled with this same mindset for years and I am still working my way out of it. It’s hard to fathom that you could not only cover your current salary but far exceed it outside of a traditional 9-5.

Here’s the thing – it does take work. You can’t expect to leave your day job and all of a sudden be rolling in cash. That’s not realistic.

However, if you are willing to put in the work, you can not only replace your salary; you can increase it whenever you want by simply growing your business.

How to Know When It’s Time to Quit

The trickiest part of quitting your day job is knowing when the time is right. You likely can’t afford to be without your income so you need to know that you will have that money coming in.

Let me share with you my own experience and how I knew I had to do something very different than what I was doing.

There had been an instance of miscommunication with my boss. I had told her something that she had forgotten and she accused me of not telling her. It was just a big mess.

One morning, I got to work and she called me into her office and basically started lecturing me like I was a child. The disrespect really blew my mind and thinking about it now, I am still blown away that I was treated that way as an adult, by an adult.

I had been in corporate for 10+ years at that point, so for her to say to me, “Roxanne, you’ve got a big girl job now so it’s time to put on your big girl panties,” was completely unwarranted.

Setting the Goal to Leave

You know, if I could go back to that day, I would march my behind to HR and get a document started so that I could keep track of all the similar things that happened with this particular boss. But I didn’t.

I’ll tell you what I did do though. On the way home that afternoon, in 5:00 traffic, I vowed that by that same time the next year, I would be working for myself.

*5:00 traffic – something else I don’t have to fight anymore since I started my business.

Something clicked in me that day. I knew that I was worth more than the treatment I was receiving at that job and I deserved to be respected as a person, as an adult, and as an employee.

Now when I set that goal, I had no idea how, no idea when, and no idea what I would be doing. I just knew with everything inside me that I had to make it happen.

Success on My Own Terms

One year later, I was working for myself. I tried many things along the way that weren’t a good fit for me. But when I found the thing I was great at, I knew I had found the way to be free.

Not only was I working for myself, but I made $50,000 in one month.

Okay, pick your jaw up off the floor and listen to me.

If I had not made the decision to leave that 9-5; if I hadn’t decided that enough was enough and I deserved more, I would probably still be right there, being mistreated and killing myself for one little promotion and a couple thousand dollars more every year.

It took courage for me to leave my job and it will take courage for you to do so. But it is possible.

If you want to leave your 9-5, it can happen. It all begins with your mindset. Get your mind in the right place and great things will follow!
