Overcome this DIS-EASE or Your Business will FAIL!
Let me ask you a question.
Do you consider yourself a perfectionist?
The Damage Perfectionism Causes
I’m over here raising my hand high. Yes, I am a perfectionist. And I can tell you one thing for certain about perfectionism; it is a disease.
You may think that your perfectionism helps you achieve a higher level in your work but that’s a lie.
The only thing perfectionism does is stop you from taking action when you need to take it. It causes you to procrastinate.
Kicking Perfectionism to the Curb
Over the past 14 months, I have been crippled by perfectionism. During that time, I can only recall one instance when I pushed my perfectionism aside and took action. Only one time when I put something out there without worrying about how it looked or whether it was perfect.
The amazing thing about that one instance where I shoved the perfectionism away and took action is that the outcome was astronomical. The results for my client were amazing and that translated to amazing results for my business.
If nothing else, this example has taught me that I need to just stop with the perfectionism already. And if you find it crippling you, you need to stop with it already too.
Here’s what you need to do: take your perfectionism, dig a deep hole, and bury it. Put some heavy rocks on top. And never dig it up.
Perfectionism Stems from Fear
It’s easy to think that our perfectionism is a good thing that helps us put out more high-quality work. We might think that it makes us harder workers or more productive. But that’s a lie.
The root of perfectionism is fear.
We use perfectionism as a cover-up for the fear we feel deep inside. We don’t want anybody to know how fearful we are so we act like we just need to keep working on something or tweaking it to get it right.
What Are Your Deepest Fears?
Inside of each one of us, there are fears. Some fears are unique to us as individuals and some are universal. A few of the more universal fears might be –
- Fear of failure
- Fear of success
- Fear of being judged by others
Regardless of which of these fears you struggle with, you may be using perfectionism to hide those fears from others and possibly even from yourself.
What are we to do about this perfectionism? How can we overcome it?
Pivoting in My Business
I mentioned that about 14 months ago, I finally decided to just do something and not worry about how beautiful it was or whether it was perfect.
At the time, I had several clients that I was doing various marketing projects
I loved the work I was doing but I was very interested in getting involved in Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube advertising. I had worked with a mentor who taught me what I needed to know to do this type of work.
I had the skills. Now, I needed the clients.
Finding My First Client
The clients I was servicing weren’t ready for the type of services I wanted to offer but I wasn’t sure how to find the clients I needed.
I was doing all the right things; attending networking events, putting my services out there, asking everyone I was already working with, but I was really struggling to find my first client.
If you want my secrets on how to find your first social media advertising client, I made an entire video about that here.
I’m going to be completely transparent with you; I sat on my plan for about a week. Yes, I was still afraid to take action that I thought might not work.
But finally, after a week, I put together my proposal and I sent it off before I could talk myself out of it. It only took me 30 minutes to put everything together.
The very next day I received a call from the business owner asking if I could come in and meet with him to discuss the proposal I had sent in.
What I sent him was far from perfect. Looking back, I should probably have taken more time on it. And I was scared. I was scared to send it and scared that I wouldn’t hear back. Not only did I hear back; but it was within just a few hours of me sending it over.
Take Imperfect Action
The reason it is so important to get rid of the perfectionism is that when you do, you always come out ahead in the end.
I struggled for too long trying to get my first social media advertising client and when I took some action, no matter how imperfect, I got that client in one day.
Here’s my challenge to you: take imperfect action today. Even if you just do one thing every day that’s imperfect, you will soon be taking more action than you ever have and perfectionism won’t have a hold on you anymore!
